Construction Activity
Investment in non-residential building construction is an estimate of the value spent on industrial, commercial and institutional buildings by firms and governments.
Permit values by CMA group together the total permit values issued in a particular Census Metropolitan Area.
Building permits issued for the construction of new buildings and improvements are one of the first steps in the construction process, thus are widely used as a leading indicator of building activity.
However, permits are not necessarily an accurate measure of actual construction activity. Not all construction requires a permit nor does it mean that once a permit is issued that the activity takes place in the year issued or proceeds at all.
This report contains statistics on overall permit values, grouped by major ICI category as well as residential permits and the overall total.
